Joshua Vogel was raised in New Mexico in the 1970s and has traveled extensively through Australia, Haiti, Europe, and the American West. He pursued Anthropology and Art History studies at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, followed by Architecture at the University of Oregon, where he began working seriously with wood.
By the mid-1990s, Joshua Vogel had relocated to New York City, where he established his first studio. However, he ultimately chose a country lifestyle over that of the city. He moved to the Hudson Valley to reconnect with the essentials of life, design, woodworking, and his first love—wood sculpture.
Vogel is known for being meticulous and detail-oriented. His indomitable energy, innate sense of more significant design issues, and love of the creative process set him apart. Each freeform turning is entirely handmade, and every piece undergoes a lengthy process that can take up to six months to complete. The wood is carefully harvested, shaped, seasoned, and shaped again. The result is a beautiful, unique, poetic sculpture that tells the story of its creation and evokes a connection to the larger natural world.
Joshua Vogel’s Sculptural Kitchen Tools are hand-carved from maple or cherry wood, creating functional objects. Each unique tool is part of a limited edition of 365 produced yearly, celebrating a comforting connection to daily chores and the love that goes into a home-cooked meal.
