Bramley Mountain Farm in Bovina Center is renowned for rearing Belted Galloway beef cattle. These cattle are nurtured from birth to harvest in the farm’s pastures, producing high-quality and delicious meat. The farm offers whole and sides of beef for purchase and individual cuts directly at the farm.
The Belted Galloway Breed, commonly known as Belties, has a long history dating back to the 16th century in the former Galloway district of Scotland. The breed was first brought to North America in 1939. One of the distinctive features of Belted Galloways is their double coat of hair, providing insulation during the harsh winter months in Delaware County. This sets them apart from other breeds, which rely on a back fat layer for insulation.
Belted Galloways yield exceptionally lean, flavorful, and high-quality meat. What distinguishes them is the farm’s dedication to natural practices. The cattle are not administered hormones, antibiotics, or any animal by-products in their diet. Instead, they graze on grass during the pasture season and are provided with homegrown dry and fermented hay in the winter. Furthermore, steers or heifers slated for harvest are finished with whole corn or, upon request, finished solely with grass, ensuring a varied and wholesome diet for the animals.
