Black Staatsburg: The Gilded Age
Saturday Feb/01/2025 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pmCost: Free Event
What did the “Gilded Age” mean for the free Black community in the village of Staatsburg? Join our staff for a one-hour discussion that explores this question using census records, historical maps, and the broader context of race relations during the Gilded Age.
Although often pushed to the margins of society by White Americans, Black men and women managed to build a strong community despite facing constant adversity. Historically marginalized, the free Black community of Staatsburg highlights the triumphs and struggles of generations of African Americans in the Hudson Valley.
