Julie’s Jungle is the first fully accessible playground in Dutchess County, NY. It was built for children of all abilities to play and learn together. It features a 16,000 sq. ft. accessible playground and a 5,500 sq. ft. accessible serenity garden. This public park is free of charge and open daily from dawn to dusk.
The playground was created entirely by volunteers and generous community members through donations, grants, and fundraising, which continue to enhance both the playground equipment and the garden. Access to Julie’s Jungle allows all children to engage in outdoor physical activities that they might otherwise miss out on. In Dutchess County, there are over 2,500 children with disabilities, and before Julie’s Jungle, there were no accessible playgrounds for them.
Inclusive play allows children, significantly those often segregated from their peers, to improve their social skills by playing together. The result is enthusiastic participation in outdoor activities and a boost in self-confidence from engaging alongside non-disabled peers. Julie’s Jungle meets the needs of all kids, whether they are non-disabled or have visual, hearing, cognitive, or physical impairments.
