Alex’s has been a beloved part of Market Street and the Poughkeepsie community for four generations. The restaurant was originally owned by Nick & Georgia Kapogiannis, who passed it on to their great-nephew Dimitrios Pertesis in the early 2000s. 2017, the legacy continued as Michael Pertesis, Dimitrios’s son, took over the reins, ensuring that Alex’s spirit and traditions live on.
The patrons of Alex’s have included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, actress Faye Emerson, William W. Smith, of the “Trade” of the “Trade & Mark” Smith brothers Cough Drop Company, as well as numerous city officials, lawyers, judges, business people, workers, residents, and travelers from both near and far. Alex’s has been downtown Poughkeepsie’s social and food hub for over 100 years, welcoming people to enjoy a cup of coffee, griddle cakes, homemade hash, hand-crafted burgers, and a legacy of hospitality and food spanning over a century.
